Together Today votes yes for Earth Hour

Vote Earth – your light switch is your vote

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

Local environmental cooperative, Together Today is voting yes for Earth by supporting the global Earth Hour campaign.

Building on the success of last year’s efforts, Together Today is working with members to coordinate local initiatives for Earth Hour. The project team includes Newcastle City Council, NBN, The Herald, Port Stephens Council, Lake Macquarie Council, Maitland City Council, Hunter Water Corporation, EnergyAustralia, Newcastle Permanent, TAFE NSW – Hunter Institute and Port Waratah Coal Services.

The key lesson learnt from last year was to switch off lights as well as other non essential appliances. Analysis of Newcastle City Council’s http://www.climatecam.com/ zones showed that last year some areas decreased while others remained static or even increased.

Last year the region's power consumption fell from an average baseline of 531.01 megawatt hours to 508.4 megawatt hours , a 4.3 per cent reduction, between 8pm and 9pm. The Hunter switch-off prevented 24 tonnes of greenhouse gas from entering the earth 's atmosphere. That is the equivalent of turning off 1.6 million energy-efficient light globes for an hour or, if sustained for a year, equal to taking 47,200 cars off the road. By comparison, Sydney CBD's energy usage dropped from 231.8 megawatt hours to 212.4 megawatt hours or 8.4 per cent, a saving of 21 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Let’s step it up this year and work together for Earth Hour!
